type='text'>IPT 286 Reflection

1. i think the best aspect of this learning experience is that i have learned how better to manage my time so that i can get my lesson plans written and the technology integration set up to work in my classroom.
2. the most challenging aspect is getting up the motivation to complete the assignments. i don't feel the same pressure that a teacher would feel in preparing the lesson plans in a timely fashion, but at least at this point i know how much time and motivation it takes to get things like this done and i can plan better when i actually enter the field.
3. i was planning to use technology in my classroom before i took this class so not much has changed. i think the only thing that i have had to adjust is what i can use as far as technology goes due to copyright and other restrictions.
4. the top two "takeaways" would be the knowledge of copyright and other ethical issues and the timing that it takes to be prepared to teach.

<img width='1' height='1' forerunner to the battle of gettysburg. i want my students to map out the causes and effects of the battle of fredricksburg because it will help them gain a better understanding of the outcome of the battle of gettysburg. this will be aimed at the 11th grade level for history.
2. i'm going to need to be aware of internet usage/availibility as well as the availibility of the software that will be used.
3. i will be using US History I: Standard 9, objective 2.
4. i'm planning on using the internet, as well as the Inspirations program to help develop the project.
5. the students will create a map/timeline of the different causes and effects of the battle of fredricksburg. they'll look at both the union and the confederacy, and they'll have to type up a description of the information that they have used.

<img width='1' height='1' copyright. copyrights permission lasts for 2 years. you can use something you've recorded off tv for 45 days after you've recorded it. 1 in 5 computers has a virus on it. find removal tools online at symantec.com. make sure you scan everything on the computer (including email). keep the OS updated and patch up weaknesses. the longer an update has been out the safer it is. it's super easy to get essays off line. technology cheating in HS and in college is huge. cheating isn't as obvious as it used to be. harder to detect. no cell phone/calculator policy so that it's easier to monitor<br Cold War era.)

I. Aniticipatory Set
a. Students will come into class and will find “please identify the characteristics of JFK that made the nation nervous about his administration.”
b. This will introduce the first topic of the lesson
II. Objective
a. Students will examine the successes and failures of the various political administrations; i.e., Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Nixon.
b. This will help students to better understand the politics of the nation at the time and what the American public wanted from the leader of the nation. (Bloom’s Taxonomy: Comprehension)
III. Instructional Input
a. Using a power point presentation each administration will be discussed in brief. (students are expected to have read the text and be familiar with the subject being taught that day).
i. Nixon: election, policies, Vietnam, aims for nation, views on containment and Cold War, Watergate
b. Discussion from the students will be expected. Input will be asked for and students should be able to respond intelligently from reading and from inferences made from the lecture.
IV. Modeling
a. Show clips of debates between Kennedy and Nixon
b. Show some TV campaign commercials from that era
V. Checking for Understanding
a. Question students throughout lesson to make sure that they’re following along and are grasping the key concepts. (Bloom’s Taxonomy: Analysis)
b. Assign project
i. Students will create a 45 sec political commercial that could have been aired during the Cold War Era. Hand out info sheet and assign due date
ii. Students will use power point, digital cameras, the internet, CDs, DVDs, and other technologies the feel are necessary to complete the assignment.
VI. Guided Practice
a. Students will be given time to choose their groups and begin brainstorming ideas for the project.
b. Teacher will walk around classroom offering suggestions and answering questions that may arise.
VII. Independent Practice
a. Students will take information and work on project outside of school to be turned in at the end of the week.
VIII. Closure
a. Full closure will come at the end of the unit when all the topics are discussed in summary, projects are presented and review guide is handed out.

Evaluation of technology: i think that the technology i use in my lesson plan will help the students understand more fully what they need to know. the technology they use in their commercials will help them integrate things into their learning process that they wouldn't normally associate with school.

Rubric and Explanation of project

Political Campaign Commercial

Task: you and your group of no more than 3 people and no fewer than 2 people will be responsible for making a campaign commercial that would have been seen on TV during the Cold War era. You’ve seen examples in class and know what is expected of you. The commercial should be a minimum of 30 seconds and a maximum of 45 seconds. Please make good use of your time.

Grading: this assignment is out of 100 points. 40 of those points will be a group evaluation. Each member of the group will fill out the evaluation form at the bottom of this sheet and turn it in with the project. The remaining points will be my evaluation of your project. I will be looking at creativity, length, accuracy (with regard to facts), presentation, and content. Each of the areas I evaluate will be worth 12 points.

Topics to include: nuclear power, space race, Vietnam, Communism (McCarthyism). You can use these as a jump off point, but look through your text book and refer back to lecture notes to expand this list and make it your own.

Materials to use: you may use power point, digital cameras, movie camera, music, DVDs, CDs, or any other technology you feel would add to the presentation of your project.

Due Date: a copy of your video (VHS, DVD, or CD) is due in my box in the History office no later than 3 pm Friday afternoon. Any projects turned in after that time will be docked 25%. There will be no exceptions to this.

Group Evaluation

Name:
Name:
Name:
Participation: ?/10

Did equal share of the work: ?/10

Flexible with ideas and time: ?/10

graphing video

obviously it's hard to integrate technology in a third grade class room, but by the time we get to teach that may be a completely different story.

as far as technology used in the classroom, about the extent of it was an overhead and a spreadsheet program. overheads are good tools, but are quickly becoming outdated. it was nice that the children were able to learn how to manipulate a spreadsheet program. that will be a valuable skill that they can take with them into the upper grades.

i thought the use of the m&m's was good. it gave the children an incentive to work and to get the things accomplished that they had been assigned. i found that as a child i always learned better when there was a good incentive involved. whether it be candy, other food, or extra credit points.

while not much technology was used, what was displayed was used effectively and has taught students skills that they can use later in life.

pearl harbor video

i had some technical difficulties as i watched this, so please forgive the choppiness...

i liked the way the teach chose to integrate technology into her classroom, but i didn't necessarily agree with the way she chose to set up the groups for the progect. if only one student has the opportunity to learn the skills to manipulate the technology, what are the other students going to do if they have to do something similar in the future?

i was impressed with the teacher's knowledge of what she wanted done and the research and time that she put into the preparation for the lesson. not a lot of teachers will actually put that much time and effort into their lesson plans.

i also liked the different kinds of technology that the students had access to: internet, digital cameras, computers etc. that's a lot of responsibilty for the students, but it also shows the abilities of the younger generations.

overall, i thought the idea was creative and effective for the students and it also gave the teacher the chance to see what the students could and could not handle.

<img width='1' height='1'
